We have been presented with a unique opportunity to experiment and try new things this year. Most of our programs are still group based. However, I know that a large group setting isn’t suited for everyone. I am willing and interested in organizing and providing an alternative option to those who want to get together but in one on one or small group settings. Everyone is unique and has unique needs, so it is in my interest to create multiple spaces for all our youth to thrive. I will also be holding virtual office hours each week, Thursdays from 6-7:30. If those times do not work, just shoot me a text. I would love to chat/facetime with our youth at any time of the day, anytime of the week. Pastor Rebecca
Fall 2020 Elementary Youth Small Groups
You may have been wondering what the plan is for elementary youth this upcoming fall, and I am so happy to be able to put your minds at ease. This year is looking different, and our youth groups will be looking different too.
Rather than doing a singular large group we are spreading out our programs throughout the week into smaller groups of about 10-12 students. Each small group will have a specific theme throughout this fall. The goal is to create intentional spaces that can cater to each of our kids’ unique interests and abilities. Each student will be able to sign up for ONE small group. The sign ups follow the rules of first come, first serve, and so please return your kids’ registration and medical release back to us as soon as you can.
Here are descriptions of the elementary small groups for the fall:
Theatre & Bible Storytelling (Tuesdays from 3:15-4:30)
Led by Pastor Rebecca
Once upon a time, a long, LONG time ago, the stories that we have written down in our Bibles were told and performed out loud by the best storytellers of the community. So we are going to follow in their footsteps. We will become storytellers. We will be doing theatre games, acting and performing, playing around the stories, telling them in our own words, and maybe even memorizing a story or two.
Kindergarten Gathering (Wednesdays from 3:15-4:30)
Led by Pastor Sara
Pastor Sara and friends will be gathering together for a chance to hear some amazing stories and have fun. We will play games, color, make art, and other activities as we learn more about God and God’s Word.
Bible Games (Wednesdays from 3:15-4:30)
Led by Chris and Abigail
Chris and Abigail’s small group will be utilizing games to engage students while learning about the Bible. No better description can be found than this quote from Chris, “It will be the greatest group of all time. If your child attends only one group in her/his lifetime, this is the one. You will be astounded by the amount of knowledge that will be bestowed upon your child by these two amazing group leaders.”
Music Exploration (Wednesdays from 3:15-4:30)
Led by Pastor Austin and Gabriel
Join Gabriel and Austin this fall in a class exploring various musical opportunities. Students will learn fun songs we use in our worship services and hand signals and dances to accompany them. Students will also have opportunities to learn about a variety of instruments, including piano, guitar and drums. We will introduce basic music theory, and relate our musical experiences with Bible stories along the way. At the end of the fall, the students who want to participate in leading our congregation in a musical offering will be able to, at a date to be determined.
Fiber Arts (Thursdays from 3:15-4:30)
Led by Pastor Rebecca
In this small group we will be learning and making. Together we will explore all things fabric, yarn, and thread. The activities we will do include but are not limited to: sewing, crochet, knitting, fabric painting, weaving, and tying. Hopefully by the end of the small group we will plan, organize, and create an art piece that will be hung up and displayed for all to admire and enjoy.
The structure of each small group is simple:
- 3:15-3:30 Sign in and Snack
- 3:30-4:30 Small group Activities
- 4:30-5:00 Pick up
There is one group that is for kindergarteners only; otherwise, all the other small groups will be for 1st thru 4th grade students. Each kid will remain in their small group’s room until being picked up. Unless there is a family emergency, we ask that you do not pick up your kid sooner to allow the leaders of the group to finish their lessons. Since we might have a wait list for certain groups, we ask that you honor the time you sign up for from Sept. to Dec. If your kid is feeling unwell, call us to let us know and we will keep the spot for you. Otherwise, two no-call, no-shows will result in us filling the spot with a kid from the wait list.
Not only is the group structure different but also the process of dropping off and picking up your kids. If your kids have been attending KidZone, this will sound familiar for we will be following the Kidzone guidelines.
- If you are dropping off your kid, you will call the small group leader. When the small group leader gives you the green light, your kid can come in. You can accompany them to the doors of the entryway, where we will meet them and give them a temperature check.
- Each small group is from 3:15-4:30. We ask that you pick up your kid(s) from 4:30-5.
- When picking up your kid: Call/text the small group leader. The group leader will escort your kid to the door and let you know to come and meet them.
Masks or face shields are required for entry into and movement throughout the building; though once in the small group the students may be able to take off their masks at their leader’s discretion. IF school is let out for weather-related issues, we will not have small groups. IF in-person school is canceled for COVID, we will continue having small group unless otherwise informed.
If you are interested in an online elementary small group or some other online option, please let Pastor Rebecca know via email ( ) or by call/text (319-215-7900).
